The existing economy functions through a combination of profit-seeking by investors and corporations and deal-seeking by consumers, all within the "invisible hand" (self-organizing dynamics) of the market. But most corporations are run top-down, and the choices presented to consumers are not dictated by them - except through market research that treats them only as consumers.

The new economy taps into the innate energy of people to create things, activities, value and meaning for themselves, individually and together. Their passions and skills matter and, when they are freed and connected, can generate most of what is needed for rewarding lives for all. Many ideas, cultures, processes, technologies, and institutions can facilitate the realization of this possibility.
